Risking All for Love
The Book of Magic explores how having love in life is essential to living. Love is so important that risking one's life is acceptable.
Love is at the heart of the Owens’ family curse. Maria curses the bloodline because Maria “[blames] love for her undoing, for she’d chosen the wrong man, with dire consequences” (4). The curse can be fatal to those whom the Owens family members love, as evidenced by Jet losing Levi and Franny losing Haylin. The family does sort out how to protect themselves. Vincent fakes his death to be with the man he loves, and Gillian follows rules to not confess her love, marry, or live together. In doing so, Vincent and Gillian may be able to be involved in loving relationships, but the restrictions and fear still remain.
