Summary

Part IV begins after the ambush as Ory realizes his hands are horrifically burned. He saved the books, and is grateful that Paul’s was in another carriage. Ory confronts a hostage, learning that they are from Transcendence and were protecting the Transcended. Now, they are planning to attack New Orleans to eradicate the false prophet before he destroys the world. Ory and the others decide to continue on to New Orleans.

After Naz and Malik amputate one of Ory’s fingers, they continue on. One night, Naz overhears Ory telling his shadow that it can leave once he gets everyone safely to New Orleans. She wonders if her own has latched onto her hope for what they will find.
