Summary
In Chapter 15, which returns to Hannie’s point of view, Hannie warns Juneau that they must leave, but Juneau is busy cutting soles for her shoes out of newspaper to “keep the conjures away” (182). For the first time, Hannie notices how neatly the newspaper articles have been tacked up, as if the person who put them there did not want to cover up any significant information. She wonders what they say, and admits to Juneau that she cannot read. Juneau tells Hannie she needs to learn to read because if she earns her land, there will be a paper that needs to be signed. She reasons that if Hannie cannot read, she will not know what she is signing.
