Summary

Chapter 9 returns to Hannie’s point of view. Hannie talks to her mother, wondering if she did the right thing following the trunks she believed held Missy and Juneau. Gus McKlatchy, who is helping her hide, hears her and warns her if she is not quiet she will get them both thrown off the boat because neither of them has a ticket. At this point, Gus believes that Hannie is a boy named Hannibal.

Hannie thinks that Missy and Juneau must be in the passenger rooms, but has no way to check those rooms. She can mix freely with the Black roustabouts during the day. Gus, however, has the opposite problem. Because he is White, he does not pass for a roustabout, but he also does not have a ticket to show if asked so he must do his moving around at night...
