Summary
One of the publishers, M. Chastain, visits Saint Rémy and tells Agnès that he wants to publish her book. He invites Agnès to travel to Paris to meet with the press in several months. Fabienne tells Agnès that she wants her to continue to pretend to be the book’s author because this makes them “equally essential” (77). Fabienne resolves to prepare Agnès for her trip to Paris. Agnès, as an adult, notes that she and Fabienne “were the perfect pair, one seeking all that the other could experience” (82). Agnès and Fabienne spend the summer writing their second book.
