Summary

In Chapter 42, set in March 1978, Beth returned home to the Greer mansion a week after she was acquitted. Upstairs, Beth heard the water running. She walked upstairs where she confronted Lily in the master bedroom. Beth told Lily she could not live there. Lily suggested that Beth could sign the house over to her. Beth refused and Lily told her that she did not have a choice. Beth for a moment wanted to just do what Lily told her so Lily would not get mad. If she stayed in the house and did what Lily wanted her to do, she knew that eventually she would have to kill someone.
