Summary

In Chapter 30, set in December 1968, Lily came to the Greer mansion for Christmas with bruises on her face. Mariana pretended to ignore the bruises, but the girls could hear her crying later. Beth knew something had happened to Lily at her foster home. Lily was quieter and her eyes were hollow. Julian stayed home that Christmas, but Beth did not like the way Lily watched him.

David, a groundskeeper, disappeared that Christmas. He was supposed to work the day after Christmas, but he never did. Because he was just a groundskeeper, Julian and Mariana did not put any effort into trying to find him.

It was not until April that David’s remains were located at the bottom of the cliff. It was declared a suicide, but Beth sensed Lily had something to do with it.
