Summary
In Chapter 1, the Greer mansion sat on the hill in the rich neighborhood of Arlen Heights. The narrator describes it as being ugly when it was built. Julian Greer renovated it when he bought it in 1950 and made it uglier. Within twenty-five years of the purchase, Julian had been murdered in the kitchen. His wife, Marianne, was later killed in a car crash.
On this particular night, it was raining. A footprint appeared on the front lawn. A cabinet door opened even though the house was dark. An indistinct shape appeared in a bedroom window. A hand pressed against the glass. A few minutes later, the hand faded.
