Trauma
Experiences of trauma, and recovery from those experiences, are the main focus of the book. Trauma is defined as any negative experience that destabilizes mental, emotional, and / or physical function. It can cause malfunctions in how the brain works; how the mind (or consciousness) responds to information received by the brain; and how the body and its systems respond to what the mind communicates. Throughout the book, the author suggests that experiences of trauma are becoming the fundamental and defining medical health issue of contemporary life, and suggests that unless steps are taken to improve how trauma is treated, it can and will become damaging to society as a whole.
