Summary

In Chapter 9, Berg hears rumors that "if you lived in Talinas long enough, you would inevitably go crazy" (57). Many of the residents do seem to fit this description. One man, Woody, who drinks at the Tavern, proves on the edge of sanity when he runs into Berg at the grocery store, then leads him down into a cave in the forest. In the back of the cave are a series of papier-mâché bodies hanging from the ceiling.

In Chapter 10, Berg and Garrett deliver a boat to Alejandro, the local boatbuilder. He recognizes the house on the property as the one into which he broke at the beginning of the novel. At the shop, Berg meets Uffa, a man who works for Alejandro, and overhears him telling Garrett about their business making boats for a drug dealer, JC, who smuggles weed to Mexico...
