Relationships

One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Olive has a relationship with her family that they pretty much allow her to do what she wishes as long as it behooves Olive and the appearance of the rest of the family. Valancy, however, must do what her family says.

Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. Before Valancy comes to care for Cissy, they are simply acquaintances. After Valancy starts caring for Cissy, the two women become true friends and companions.
