Nothing in Valancy's room has changed. Only Valancy herself has changed and evolved. She thinks how Barney will go and marry his old love. Valancy wishes she could die.

Chapter 41 Analysis

Valancy feels as if she has lived her life and now it is over. While she thinks Barney doesn't love her, he does. It foreshadows Barney proposing marriage to Valancy.
