Chapter 24 Summary
Valancy prepares Cissy for burial. The preacher from the free Methodist church oversees the burial. Uncle Wellington is one of the "reputable citizens of Deerwood" that carries Cissy to her burial plot. Valncy's whole family attends the funeral in an effort to show support for Valancy, in the eyes of the townspeople, so they can convince Valancy to come home now. A widower, Edward Beck, is but one of the many people at the funeral seeing Valancy in a new light. Beck even thinks of making Valancy his second wife. When Valancy's mother asks if she is coming home now, Valancy says she isn't going to stay at Roaring Abel's now.
Chapter 24 Analysis
Ironically, the townspeople are all acting as if Cissy never did anything wrong—treating her in death as they didn't do in life after she had a baby out...
