Chapter 5 Summary

It is Valancy's 29th birthday. While she is in her Uncle Benjamin's shop buying tea, he is making jokes about Valancy not being married at her age. For the first time, Valancy stands up to her uncle. Although Valancy has always said she doesn't want a beau to protect her feelings from being hurt, she admits to herself for the first time that she does want a husband and children. the authors keeps mentioning Valancy's slanted eyes and dark hair. Valancy passes the rector on the street. He is a man that humiliated her in front of the entire congregation when Valancy was a girl, thinking that she was a boy. Valancy checks out the new John Foster book. When she reads the first passage, it talks about fear. Valancy decides to visit Dr. Trent about her heart.
