Summary
In Part III, Chapter 15, Albert was still trying to figure out how to escape the hospital. His mind kept erasing his ability to reason (183). Though his suicide plan was illogical, Albert knew he must go through with it. He was responsible for his grandson's death. Hazel wonders if this is true, or if she has absorbed Albert's guilt. Eventually, Albert snuck out of his room and fled the building, barely escaping the orderlies. Outside, he watched "a Checker cab" creep up (186). While the driver got out to help "an old woman," Albert stole the cab (186).
In Chapter 16, the storm worsened. The streets were nearly empty of people. Erwin eventually made it downstairs with his bag of fish. He stood outside, watching the snow. The silence unnerved him. While he meditated on his relationship to silence and fear, a cab came racing...
