Summary
In Chapter 21, the techniques used to transform Natalie into Leila are described. She was taught the importance of staying true to her cover. She learned the tenants of the Islamic faith and read the works of Islamic theologians. Through this process, Natalie became Leila.
As a test, Natalie was dressed in the full gear of a Muslim woman and allowed to attend a prayer service in Jerusalem. There was a protest afterward that Natalie later learned had been initiated by Gabriel. He was glad when she said the protest made her angry with the Israelis. One day Gabriel took Natalie to visit Sumayriyya, the land of Leila’s ancestors which was stolen from the family by the Jews. Gabriel told Natalie that Leila’s family name was Hadawi.
