Summary

In Chapter Seven, Diana joins Gwyneth and Granny Dorcas for her first lesson about Higher Magic. At first, Diana is hesitant to trust it, especially when Gwyneth tells her that she must confront anger and fear every day. However, her perspective on it shifts when she is able to use happy memories of her family and research to control it. Gwyneth explains that curiosity and promise coexist alongside fear within the Darkness and that uncertainty is what scared Diana’s father away. Then, Granny Dorcas gives Diana a pack of cards -known as the black bird oracle- and explains the Proctor family’s connection to birds. Furthermore, the cards mean something different to whoever they choose, so Diana has to follow the path of darkness to understand them properly. Unfortunately she will have to meet the coven’s chair of divination...
