Summary
Chapter Four opens as Diana follows Julie and Gwyneth into the home that they call the Old Place and learns that every witch in the surrounding area will know about Diana’s arrival by morning. As Diana feels an overwhelming amount of dark magic in the walls, Gwyneth explains the sigils were made by Proctor witches to keep the magic in rather than by humans to keep it out. Over breakfast, Diana learns that Gwyneth graduated from and later taught Geology at Mount Holyoke College. Then, Diana is shocked when Gwyneth reveals that Diana’s father, Stephen Proctor, refused to marry her mother, Rebecca Bishop, unless she agreed to numerous terms: no higher magic, no membership with the coven, and no children unless she agreed to spellbind any that showed signs of Proctor magic.
