Late 18th Century
As stated towards the beginning of the narrative, the story is set towards the end of the 1700s. This is a time of great excitement in fields of science, as many exciting new discoveries are being made. As a devoted scientist, Aylmer seems to view these discoveries as further evidence to the possibility of humanity’s ability to exert control over nature.
Aylmer and Georgiana’s Home
The story begins in the home of Aylmer and Georgiana. They are a newly married couple, and they live happily together at first. However, Aylmer soon develops a revulsion towards Georgiana’s birthmark, and he is unable to hide his revulsion. When Georgiana discovers this revulsion, she quickly states that she is willing to let Aylmer try to remove her birthmark.
