The Bird King
The Bird King symbolizes all that is good and giving about the human spirit. Only after Fatima learns to sacrifice herself on behalf of her friends, dispel her fear, and have faith, does she earn the title of king of the birds. By the end of the novel she also learns that anyone can be the Bird King. The role is within anyone who proves herself worthy.
Vikram
Vikram's character symbolizes spiritual enlightenment. Acting as Fatima's guide, Vikram illuminates the darkest and most treacherous aspects of her physical and psychological explorations. Vikram represents the connection between the tangible and heavenly worlds, his relationship with Fatima allowing her to understand the importance in acknowledging and communing with both.
