Section 2: pages 24-30 Summary
As they wait for Jiya to wake, Kino does not think his friend can ever be happy again, but his father says Jiya will be happy someday "for life is always stronger than death" (page 24). Jiya will feel he can never be happy again when he wakes, and he will cry but the crying will lessen over time. Kino's family will allow him to be sad, continuing to live as they always do, and one day, Jiya will begin to feel better, crying only at night. Over time, his body will renew itself, and his mind will begin thinking, making him live.
