The Lost Generation

The Lost Generation refers to a group of American literary intellectuals, poets, artists, bohemians, and writers who lived primarily in Paris but also other parts of Europe from the time period spanning the end of World War I to the beginning of the Great Depression. The term "Lost Generation" is attributed to Gertrude Stein but was popularized by Ernest Hemingway. In Hemingway's book A Moveable Feast (published posthumously in 1964), one chapter is entitled "Une Génération Perdue" Since the term is used to describe the generation of youth that came of age during World War I, this generation of youthful idealists who drank too much, had love affairs, sought the meaning of life, and created some of the best American literature is sometimes also referred to as the "World War I Generation."
