The reader position symbolizes the idea of rank an status within a corporation. Reader is a position that represents Caroline's rise in Fabian Publications. She becomes a reader quickly. This sets her on the fast track toward an editor's position, which also happens more quickly for Caroline than for most people in the company.

The Kitchen Curtains

Gregg sews a set of kitchen curtains for David, and these symbolize her desire to marry him and perform the domestic duties a wife would do in her home. David does not see the same symbolism and the curtains do not make a difference in their relationship, as Gregg as planned.
