Caroline Bender

Caroline is a young woman who begins work after her engagement abruptly ends. She is a strong character who believes a woman can have whatever life she wants, including a family and a career. She was raised in an upper-middle-class home and fully expected to marry and live out her life as a happy housewife, but that dream is dashed when her fiancé, Eddie, marries someone else. She has already earned her college degree at Radcliffe and she takes a job mainly as a way of keeping busy after her failed engagement. She is deeply hurt about Eddie's betrayal, but finds she loves him despite the hurt.

Caroline is smart and ambitious, and she quickly learns that the office politics are an inescapable part of the life of a career woman. She works in the typing pool of a publishing company for awhile, but is quickly singled...
