Summary
Chapter 3 opens in London. Nuri observes the peace and prosperity of the area, which reminds him of Syria before the war. He thinks about his asylum interview and worries that he and Afra will be deported based on some technicality or loophole. He returns to the refugee lodgings and converses with the Moroccan man. Nuri speaks of his life as a beekeeper and finds a bee in the building’s courtyard. The narrative shifts back to Nuri and Afra making their way out of Aleppo. They contacted a smuggler and agreed to pay him for safe passage out of the city. The smuggler was scheduled to pick up another man with Nuri and Afra, but the man was found and killed by soldiers or a militia before the smuggler arrived.
