Summary
In “The Clearing,” Chapter 7, Frank and Imelda visited Dickie in the city. Willie joined. Dickie was struck by how much Frank loved Imelda. Imelda was delighted by Willie. When Dickie and Willie returned home afterwards, Dickie “kissed Willie on the lips,” thinking he might be in love (416).
For the next three months, Dickie felt happy. He felt like his true self. His relationship with Willie grew. Dickie no longer wanted to “avoid what he was” (419).
When Frank returned to Dublin unexpectedly, Dickie’s life changed. Frank was unwell. He had been drinking and using. Feeling desperate, Frank wanted Dickie’s advice about Maurice, his upcoming match, the garage, and Imelda. Dickie felt proud of himself when he gave Frank advice.
