Summary
In “The Clearing,” Chapter 1, when Dickie arrived in Dublin for college, he ran into a young man who started talking to him about sex. Dickie was confused by his “absurd language and preposterous manner” (338).
In Chapter 2, Dickie, PJ, and Victor dig a hole in the woods near the Bunker. They are trying to access water, as it is the “most crucial requirement of self-sufficiency” (342). The three have been preparing the Bunker for the apocalypse. Although Dickie is sore every night, the work is rewarding. However, Imelda does not understand their project and dislikes PJ’s involvement. Although Dickie “can understand Imelda’s concerns,” he likes being with Victor in the woods (346). He values their survival methods and Victor’s company.
