Summary

In Chapter 11, while reading a magazine, Michele learns that a caterpillar, when in its chrysalis, dissolves completely into "goo" before being reborn as a butterfly (259). She sees this as a lesson in the importance of letting go and living with uncertainty when moving through a transition in life. At work, Michele treats a young child who has had a seizure. Based on an inexplicable instinct, Michele orders extra tests, partly because the child has not woken up after the seizure. The test results eventually indicate that this child has been physically abused. She is transferred to a Children's Hospital and Michele later learns that her father has been charged with abuse.

A new patient arrives: an elderly woman who is not breathing. After attempting to resuscitate her, Michele declares the time of death. However, Michele and the rest of the medical team...
