Summary
In Chapter 5, a young man named Dominic is brought into the ER in handcuffs by police, who are insisting he be examined, despite his persistent refusals. Lauren, a resident, insists to the patient that he must submit to the exam until Michele intervenes. Dominic has been arrested by police on the accusation of swallowing bags of drugs. Michele makes him aware of the risks to his health and life should be accusations be true; Dominic insists on his innocence and refuses medical examination. Knowing that he has the legal right to do so, Michele prepares to discharge him, against the wishes of the police. Many people, including Lauren and the police, believe that Michele must examine Dominic if he is under arrest, but she insists that she will not break the law and violate his rights, even if other doctors have done...
