Summary
In Chapter 3, Michele works the night shift, which is a break from her administrative duties as director of performance improvement in the emergency department. Around 1 am, Michele is forewarned that a newborn baby, who is not breathing, in on his way to the ER. The medical team prepares the resuscitation room and Michele is concerned that they don't have tools small enough to fit down the baby's throat. When the baby arrives, it is clear that he has died, but the team does everything they can to try to resuscitate him. Michele struggles to intubate the infant, even after procuring smaller tubes, as she does not want to cut or injure his body, as often happens as a necessary side effect during intubation and resuscitation efforts.
