Answelica

Answelica represents the idea that looks can be deceiving. While Answelica comes off as scary—and indeed, terrifies all the monks at the Order of the Chronicles of Sorrowing—she is, in fact, a gentle creature. Answelica is maternal and nurturing. She acts as Beatryce’s guide and protector.

Brother Edik’s eye

Brother Edik’s “wandering eye” symbolizes his gift to see the world differently from most people (22). Brother Edik is unique in that he sees beauty in everything. He rejoices in the smallest things, and later spreads that joy to Beatryce.

The sword

The sword which Jack carries, stolen from the sick soldier, is a symbol of vengeance. Beatryce vows to deliver that soldier to the king. In the end, it is Jack who brings the sword there. Nevertheless, it represents a way for the children to take revenge into their own hands.
