Summary

Brother Edik feels afraid of the prophecy as he walks alongside his friends in Chapter 43. He takes comfort in having Answelica lead their party. He internally vows to find Beatryce and give her the maple candies.

Beatryce is in a dungeon cell in Chapter 42. She remembers how she read her mother the story of the wolf-king one morning. Her mother warned her to never admit to her literacy in the outside world, unless some pressing need demanded it. Beatryce comforts herself by telling the mermaid story aloud.

In Chapter 43, Jack’s party comes across the robber who killed his parents. Answelica attacks the robber, making him fall. Just before Jack can slay him with his sword, Cannoc advises him not to kill. Instead, he hands Jack the robber’s knife, saying that the man is “nothing without it” (108). Jack feels the letter...
