Summary
The next chapter is titled “Chapter XVII: The Prince in Exile.” The Prince hears Gaston arrive at the castle asking for help. He does nothing, knowing Lumiere will handle it. It seems that Gaston – and everyone in the court – is losing his memories of the Prince. Lumiere says “A man came to the castle. A stranger, but so familiar” (95). Lumiere says the man claimed to have been attacked by “a beast … some sort of animal” (96). Lumiere suggests they spread the word that the castle is unoccupied, cared for by the groundskeeper. The Prince asks if there is a groundskeeper. Lumiere says “Not in the traditional sense … but … Everyone is here” and tending their duties (96).
