The Mile 81 Rest Stop
The Mile 81 rest stop is the setting for the story “Mile 81.” King shares that he patterned this story after a spot on the interstate between the University of Michigan and his home, a spot where he feared he would have car trouble. King is able to set a foreboding tone by setting the story near this abandoned, decaying rest stop.
The Dune
The dune on a tiny island is a major setting for the story “The Dune.” The Judge’s grandfather tells him about this dune and suggests that a pirate buried treasure there. The Judge does not find buried treasure there, but he does occasionally find names written in the sand of this dune. The Judge determines that the people whose names are written in the sand die within a month.
