Summary

In King’s introduction of “The Dune,” he notes that the story arrived in a complete package. He explains he had the idea for "The Dune" when he saw what looked like writing in the sand on a beach in Florida. He thought of a quote about a magical finger and imagined there was a place where this finger wrote bad things in the sand. He describes the ending of the story as being his favorite.

Even though Judge Harvey Beecher is 90 years old, he still climbs into his kayak every day and visits the dune. He knows he is insane to continue the trips at his age, but he is addicted. He tries to shoo off a turkey buzzard that watches him as he falls trying to get out of the kayak. He tells himself the dune will be flat and smooth...
