Professor Lucifer/The Master

Professor Lucifer is one of the first characters introduced in the novel, although he is absent for the majority of the story after the first chapter. Lucifer is described as a quintessential scientist. He is a man of progress and invention, and is supposed to have built his own flying ship and all of the tools and gadgets that appear on it. Aside from his love of science, the professor also has a flare for the philosophical.

In the first scene of the novel he is seen engaged deep in a discussion with his acquaintance over the value of religion. Lucifer thinks quite highly of himself and his intellect, as evidenced by the condescending and patronizing tone he uses with his acquaintance during this discussion.

Later in the novel we are introduced to a character named the Master, who is actually Professor Lucifer in disguise...
