Summary

Chapter 13 begins with MacIan and Turnbull fleeing once again from the police. They manage to escape by way of a small stretch of woods beside the road, which they duck into out of sight as the police pass them by. They take a short rest, but are shortly confronted by the constable and are forced to flee once more. Employing a similar tactic, they distance themselves from the constable and find a suitable place to hide off the trail. As they traverse through these woods they find a large wall, which they decide to climb over.

On the other side of the wall is a garden. In the garden they meet an unnamed man who claims to be the proprietor of the grounds within the garden wall, as well as outside of the garden wall. The two men begin to...
