The Markeys' House
The majority of the short story is set at the Markeys' house. Their home is situated right next to the Andros's, and is the place where the baby party is held. Edith and Ede show up late to the event in an attempt to make an impression on the other guests. Throughout the afternoon at the Markeys', things elapse peacefully. The children play and dance, and eat their cake and refreshments. The mothers and fathers exchange niceties and adhere to normal codes of behavior.
Shortly after cake, almost everyone leaves. Edith lingers with Ede, hoping that her husband might still show up. During this small pocket of time, Ede becomes jealous of Billy, steals his teddy-bear, and pushes him to the floor twice in a row.
