John Andros
John Andros is one of the main characters of the short story. He is married to Edith, and his daughter is Ede. When Ede was born, John felt that his daughter was interrupting his passionate dynamic with his wife. Over the two years since, John has gradually adjusted to life with a baby. He takes joy in her presence, yet often grows impatient and irritated with her boisterousness.
When Edith asks John to join her and Ede at a baby party for Billy Markey, John feels excited. He is in a good mood, and thinks the event will offer him some amusement. However, as soon as he arrives at the Markeys', he hears yelling from inside and fears trouble. When he enters, he finds his wife crying and distraught. At first he tries to calm her down, but when he realizes how the Markeys have insulted Edith...
