Summary
John watched Edith walk up the path to their home, then turned to see Joe descending the "slippery steps" towards him (69). They threw off their coats and advanced towards one another, "sliding a little on the iced walk" (69). They threw punches, both slipping and falling. As soon as they stood and began again, they fell once more. No one was around. The only sound was the sound of their fight. They could see each other well in the moonlight and the "glow that shone out of the open door" (69). They continued thrashing and slipping. They fought "senselessly" for "ten, fifteen, twenty minutes" (69). Their shirts were soaked with sweat and blood. By the end, they were so tired they were holding each other up.
