Summary
Chapter 90, December 24th, 1917, Journal entry: Helena and Patrick attend the Immari Christmas Party. Lord Barton toasts Patrick, Immari’s new head of shipping. It makes him think of the last time he saw his father. He is upset with his son for joining the army. It reminds him of his own father who was hired as a substitute for a wealthy man during the civil war. He thinks the men who volunteer for war do not know the cost of war. He tells him that he has death and misery to look forward to. His father tells him to get out and not to return.
Konrad Kane approaches and introduces his wife and their son Dieter. The boy runs and jumps in Helena’s lap, crushing her stomach. Patrick grabs him and jerks him away from her. Lord Barton comes over and takes...
