Summary
In Chapter 34, Leigh searches for the bird without success. They return to the apartment as Waipo makes tea. Feng says that every leaf has a story, and Leigh becomes defensive when Fenge says the tea is Waipo’s favorite. Waipo follows a tradition called laoren cha where she washes out the kettle before pouring the tea. Leigh wonders how her mother and Waipo became so distant as Waipo brings out the passion fruit. Feng says they should make it a tradition, but Leigh is not sure as she gathers up the leaves.
They head to a Buddhist temple in Chapter 35 and Feng says this is where Leigh’s mother’s spirit lingers because her name is in the temple. Feng explains that spirits have 49 days to transition to rebirth by letting everything go. Leigh wishes someone had told her sooner, as she feels...
