Summary
In Chapter 13, the next morning, Milo receives an envelope from Purdy containing printouts of e-mails that Don sent to Purdy. Don is a military veteran who lost his legs in in Iraq. The e-mail reveals Don to be generally bitter and quite racist. He seems to desire either money or attention from Purdy. The envelope also contains Don’s address and cash for Milo to give to Don. Milo realizes that Purdy wishes for Milo to be a proxy in managing Don. Milo hopes that, in exchange, Purdy will make a big donation to the university. Milo picks up Bernie from daycare at an experimental daycare called Happy Salamander. In Chapter 14, Milo puts Bernie to bed alone, as Maura is supposedly working late at her office. Milo thinks of a woman named Constance, whom he had dated in college. He cheated on her often...
