Summary

In Chapter 12, told from Viola’s perspective, Viola thinks the hug is the one price she has to pay to see Todd. She does it but is surprised to hear Todd calling her name. She runs to him but Prentiss pulls Todd away and tells Viola to go to the funeral. He reminds them that they will see each other the following day.

After Maddy’s funeral, Mistress Coyle pulls Viola aside. She tells Viola that all of Prentiss’ promises — that he will hang the soldier who shot Maddy and that he will let her see Todd — are just appeasement. She senses Viola is more dedicated to Todd than to the women. Regardless of what happens, Mistress Coyle tells Viola she does not blame her for what happened to Maddy.
