Point of View

The novel is told in the third-person limited point-of-view following every main character with the exception of Sara. Mazna’s sections are the longest of the family, while Idris’s are the shortest. Ava, Mimi, and Naj all share about an equal amount of time. The author uses this separation to establish relationships and foreshadow events both in the past and the present. There is also a distinct sense of disconnect between each of the characters as they struggle to deal with their own feelings and problems, even when they are brought together. This is caused by the long chapters spent in each character’s head. When their family bond is reestablished, the remaining chapters are much shorter and used to wrap everyone’s story up.
