The Arrest

The Arrest symbolizes the cessation—or fundamental transformation—of modern society. One of the primary aspects of the novel’s premise is that some mysterious phenomenon has caused nearly all electronic technologies on the planet to cease, thereby sending society back to days of strict agrarianism. The characters still possess certain modern attitudes, but they adapt calmly to their new circumstances.

The Cordon

The Cordon symbolizes the irrational nature of violence and militias. By the end of the novel, the exact nature of the Cordon remains somewhat unclear.
