Summary
In "Confusion," Chapter 10, Douda and Toumi attended evening prayers. The imam preached about the danger of greed, saying God only cared about his people's "hearts" and "deeds" (59). He urged his listeners to spread God’s word.
In Chapter 11, Toumi was desperate to see his love, Baya. Tired of Toumi's lack of ambition, Baya had been avoiding him. One day, Toumi cornered her. When Baya told him she was leaving for the capital to work as "a live-in maid," Toumi was devastated (67).
In Chapter 12, Sidi continued worrying about Nawa's fate. Years ago, in Arabia, Sidi had witnessed something similar. During King Farhoud's rule, oil was discovered in the region. However, the money from the oil did not benefit the people. While the citizens lived in squalor, the elite were surrounded by riches and comfort. In the 1960s, the country attempted to amend its impoverished state...
