Chapter 14, Chapter 15, and Prologue. Summary
In Chapter 14, Darrow again awakens from a dream of Doyle. It becomes evident that he and Clarie are not intimate, as she mentions it several times when she wakes him. Meanwhile, Joe plans to take over the body of Darrow, leaving him in Maturo's body to die of suicide, so he can have Claire. Chinnie finds Jacky and explains that he believes Maturo did not kill Joe, and that he is really living in Maturo's body. The two plan to go to Darrow's house to investigate. When Darrow returns home, still in Chinnie's body, he hears something in the alley and suddenly remembers that in his dream of Doyle, he is pointing up at his own corpse, that of Darrow. As Darrow confronts Jacky and Chinnie, in Doyle's body, Darrow mistakes it for the real Doyle and...
