Summary
Mary is feeling well and prosperous enough following her successful job interview that she purchases real food, including a roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach at the deli near her house. She has also bought a bottle of wine, and as she remembers handing over her ID, she thinks about her first driver's license in her native Tennessee when she was 17 years old. In her identification photograph, she was pale and called Junia, rather than Mary. She flashes forward in her memory to when her Aunt Clara picked her up from the cabin, her previous home, and renamed her Mary in the car. Her new license was the first photograph she had ever seen of herself and she kept it displayed on her desk with her other identifying information including her Social Security card and birth certificate.
