City
The short story takes place in an unnamed city and there exists a juxtaposition between the chaos of the city and the peace of Lucas’ apartment. While the city could represent the value of community and shared spaces, it takes on its own character and appears fiercely individual, helping Lucas to understand why people need to seek out connection and shared experiences.
Lucas' apartment
Nearly the entire novel takes place in Lucas’ apartment in an unnamed city. He does not seem to have a large living space because he often emphasizes how he can hear the neighbors no matter where he is. Once Lucas opens himself up to being friends with his neighbors and joining the community, the apartment feels less like an insular environment that he needs to keep people out of and becomes more inviting.
